C2H6-Ethane (R170)
Ethane is an organic chemical compound with chemical formula C2H6. At standard temperature and pressure, ethane is a colorless, odorless gas. Like many hydrocarbons, ethane is isolated on an industrial scale from natural gas and as a petrochemical byproduct of petroleum refining. Its chief use is as feedstock for ethylene production. Ethane also can be used as a refrigerant in cryogenic refrigeration systems.
High purity ethane (N3.5 and above) is manufactured by direct hydrogenation of ethylene at high temperature in the presence of a catalyst. It is further purified using fractional distillation. Lower purity ethane is separated from a natural gas stream and further purified.
