Introduction to Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF₆) Gas
Sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) is a colorless, odorless, non-toxic, and non-flammable synthetic gas composed of one sulfur atom and six fluorine atoms. It is chemically inert, thermally stable, and has exceptional dielectric and insulating properties, making it highly valuable in industrial and scientific applications.
Major Applications of SF₆ Gas
1. Electrical Industry (Primary Use – ~80% of SF₆ Consumption)
SF₆ is widely used in high-voltage electrical systems due to its superior arc-quenching and insulating properties:

Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS): Prevents electrical discharges in high-voltage substations.

Circuit Breakers: Extinguishes arcs in power transmission systems (up to 800 kV).

Transformers & Capacitors: Enhances insulation and cooling in compact electrical equipment.
2. Medical Applications

Ophthalmology (Retinal Surgery):

Used as a temporary tamponade agent to reattach retinas.

Gradually replaced by C₃F₈ (perfluoropropane) due to shorter persistence.
