Sulfur dioxide is found as a colorless gas or when compressed, water white liquid. It has a sharp, pungent odor and is considered toxic by inhalation. Under prolonged exposure to fire or heat the containers may rupture violently and rocket. Sulfur dioxide is soluble in water, alcohol and ether and forms sulfurous acid (H2SO3) readily. It is Noncombustible.

Liquid sulphur dioxide (SO2) is a versatile chemical with many uses, both in liquid form or as a source of gaseous SO2. Liquid SO2 is used the pulp and paper industry, mining industry, and in the food industry as a preservative. It can function as a reducing agent, an oxidizing agent, a pH controller, purifying agent, preservative, a germicide and bleaching agent. SO2 can also be used as a refrigerant, heat transfer fluid and selective solvent.

Shipping and Storage
Liquid SO2 can be shipped in a number of different ways. The rate of delivery will depend in the temperature of the liquid SO2 in the cylinder. The overall rate of SO2 gas discharge will depend on the heat transfer rate from the surroundings through the walls of the cylinder. At room temperature a discharge rate of about 0.9 kg/h (2.0 lb/h) of gaseous SO2 is possible.
Larger quantities of liquid SO2 are available in one tone containers(800L).
APPLICATIONS
Chemically: Sulfurous Acid, sulphites and bisulphites, intermediate dyes, sulphonation, additive organic compounds of SO2.
Refineries: It is used as a selective solvent.
Paints and varnishes: It is used for the polymerization of dry or crude oils.
Food industry: It is used for the preservation of pulps and vegetable or fruit juices and also in wines, sulphited musts and the malt industry.
Cork industry: It is used as a germicide.
Fishing industry: It is used as a preservative and germicide.
Glass industry: glasses, lamp light bulbs, bottles and medicine bottles; it reduces breakages and eliminates sodium.
Rubbers and gelatin: It is used in solubilizing processes and also as an acidulating and preservative agent.
Tanning industry: It is used as a bichromate and lime reducing agent, and also as a bleacher in vegetable tannings.
Metallurgical industry: It is used in precious metal refining, flotation metal treatment, metallic oxide chlorination and magnesium smelting.
Pulps and papers: It is used in the stabilization of pulps’ chemical dying and in other applications.
Sugar mills: It is used in sugar cane juice treatment and as a bleacher.
Other uses: in liquor fading treatments, chlorine removal, water treatments, bed and filter cleaning, cosmetics, photographic and plastic composites, pH Mathienson control process, as a neutralizer, hexavalent chrome reducer, as a bleaching agent for paper, textiles, oils, etc. and many other applications.
